At two hundred pages and twenty-four pages, this paperback targets those interested in food recipes that use a slow cooker. With full-color, close-up photographs, there are ninety-five creations. Measurement equivalents and an index along with the author’s biography complete the book.
After an introduction, personal note regarding the author’s life, and slow cooker tips, the cookbook is divided into seven sections: breakfast and brunch, party food, side dishes, soups and stews, chilies, main dishes, and desserts.
Each recipe that covers two opened pages, complete with a photograph of the finished product, begins with a title and serving size. One or two sentences sum up the dish as a teaser. All ingredients are listed in use order followed by simplistic, easy-to-understand instructions in one to several paragraphs. Occasionally there are directions involving a prior night’s preparation.
With ten listings under breakfasts, recipes include salted caramel apple cider, sausage mushroom frittata, and ham breakfast burritos. The eleven party dishes involve rosemary party nuts, honey garlic wings, and easy salsa. The twelve side dishes complete any meal with calico barbecue beans, roasted beets, and creamy mac and cheese to name a few. There are eleven soups such as chicken tortilla, hamburger, and left-over turkey noodle along with seven chilies like steak taco chili and frito pies. Main meals have thirty-two entrees ranging from meatloaf onion bombs and tater tot casserole to Indian butter chicken and turkey-stuffed peppers. Desserts number twelve; a few titles are blueberry buckle, pumpkin caramel flan, and candy bar dip.
Having no dish listings on the contents page to find a specific recipe quickly and with no total preparation times or nutritional information, this is a nice collection of menu items that can be made in a crock pot or slow cooker without too much fuss. With the idea of putting the ingredients in a pot all at once and returning later to a complete meal may be welcomed to those who are stressed for time, tired, or want to eat healthy homemade meals.
